The relationship between alcohol and bad breath is one of contradictions. On one hand, we are told that alcohol consumption can cause bad breath, while at the same time, a number of commercial mouthwashes and rinses sold for the treatment of halitosis contain alcohol as an antibacterial ingredient. To further confusion, the scientific evidence supports the claims: that consuming alcohol can contribute to bad breath, adding that the mouthwash may have a demonstrable beneficial effect. How to explain the contradiction?
Part of the explanation is that alcohol is a drying agent, drying agents and bad breath go together, because drying agents – alcohol, tobacco and other drugs – because saliva evaporates and can even cause a decrease in the flow of saliva through the mouth. This is a bad thing to get your breath because saliva continuously, not just cleaning and cleaning the mouth, also contains antibodies and substances antiseptic, to combat organisms that can cause infection or produce unpleasant odors. People who suffer from dry the mouth often have bad breath too, while people with a healthy flow of saliva are less likely to develop bad breath. In social situations, many people realize that when they are dry mouth and bad breath drinking goes hand in hand with this scenario, if only temporarily.
Research confirms connection between the drying agents and bad breath. Studies have shown that as dried saliva in the mouth, increasing amounts of volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) are released and deported, and this can aggravate bad breath. This also at least partly explains the phenomenon of "morning breath" because flow of saliva decreases during sleep and is often dry mouth on waking. With alcohol and bad breath, the situation is often aggravated by the addition the smells of tobacco and food, which can be drying agents and sources of halitosis in the short term in its own right.
Other paints a different picture investigation of drying agents and bad breath: saliva also contains bacteria, and many of the sugars and proteins that bacteria that can decompose, producing VSC. The experiments have shown that saliva that breaks down and produces smells rotten if left to feel (another good reason to keep flowing through to a healthy rate.) Bacteria in saliva, in other words, can the source of halitosis. Alcohol is antibacterial and antiseptic, which explains the other side alcohol and bad breath: alcohol kills bacteria that come in contact with him, so that added to the alcohol in mouthwash effect, tend to achieve an improvement in halitosis.
Clearly, the combination of alcohol and bad breath products can be effective, at least in the short term, but is a price. Maybe that is a price to pay: there are other effective products to combat bad breath that do not have the side effect of causing adverse too.
