I am not sure whether people who buy these laser pointers want to know all the complex details of how they work or whether they are just happy that they do work and they can have fun using them.
I think that you need to know something beyond how far will it point.
One thing perhaps you might be interested to know is – does your beam stay the same width at distance as it measured when it left the pointer?
Does it widen with distance and how much will it measure at its furthest reach?
Do you want to have the one that appears the brightest? If you do then I think you have to go for green. The human eye recognizes green as much brighter than other colors because it is in the lower range of the colors of the spectrum.
Say you had a red 5mW pointer with a wavelength of 640nm and you had a green 5mW pointer with a wavelength of only 533nm, it is a given fact that the green one will appear much brighter.
A nanometer [nm] is a measurement of distance being 1 billionth of a meter.
Recently I read something very interesting about making holograms with laser pointers. I cannot explain how it is done here, but if you were interested you could find out quite easily online. I believe it is not a thing for beginners but if that sort of thing interests you then you could learn how.
Safety is something that is a big concern at the moment. Now that these laser pointers have become easily available and are relatively inexpensive they are within the reach of most people. Unfortunately it seems that some are getting into the hands of children and this is not good.
Kids will be kids and often they are really not aware that what they are doing with their pointers can be dangerous. It’s not just where they are pointing them but that they are looking at the beams with the naked eye and this can result in damage to the retina of the eye.
The whole point is that they are NOT toys, therefore they should not get into the hands of children, unless there is a responsible adult supervising them. Even then, accidents can happen the child could suddenly turn the beam onto someone and bingo you have possible eye damage.
It’s a great pity that something which has great potential for fun and experiments, i.e. making holograms etc. can quickly become a dangerous thing.
This has led to many strengths of laser being outlawed in many countries and we all know where that leads, pointers being illicitly imported into countries where they are banned. Also many suppliers are not scrupulous about showing the true strength of the pointer.
