How to download standalone Windows 7 updates?
I want to download Windows 7 updates in standalone files so I can save them and install them again without downloading them again if my pc crashes. I checked out the Microsoft download center but I can’t seem to browse updates by operating system…they are all mixed up. Any links would be great!
Each update has a corresponding code. When they show up on Windows Update for your computer, the code is listed there. It will generally be “KB” followed by 6 digits.
You can then look up and download those updates manually from Microsoft and apply them yourself.
After maybe a year, they themselves will compile all prior updates into a Service Pack that’s then released that you can apply at once.
Microsoft also issues monthly iso (CD) images of all updates for that month, but those are mainly useful to systems administrators handling multiple machines. You’d be downloading and sorting through a lot more updates than you need for just you and one or two PC’s.
The updates you do download via Windows Update show up in C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. You can sometimes try to extract and grab something like a new device driver that downloaded from that folder, but not all the updates in that folder are usable manually another time.
At the end of the day, it’s probably the least bandwidth and least time-consuming to just use Windows Update as it’s set up, and if you reinstall, just let it handle things itself. A rolled-up service pack will eventually release that you can download and save, and that’s how you minimize a massive set of updates a year or so from now if you repeatedly re-install.
Only if your computer is getting re-installed regularly (like weekly) or if you’re managing tens or hundreds of machines would other methods make sense.
Another thing you might do is to do a fresh install of your machine, apply all updates, then make a backup image and save it. When new updates release, you could temporarily restore that image just to apply the latest updates. Then you can backup that new updated image before going back to using your computer. When the next month happens, just repeat the procedure.
Anyway, I’d personally either manually look up and download each KB number, or hope your computer doesn’t crash regularly and wait for the service pack.
In the meantime if you’re worried about severe crashes, Windows 7 is pretty stable as-is, and your time is probably best spent simply using built-in things like system restore and the included Backup feature. That way you have regular points you can go back to if something goes wrong.
When the service pack eventually releases you might simply consider doing a fresh installation to apply it. That would be the more “normal” way to go….
